The latest study results on nicotinamide riboside shows that it’s effective in rejuvenating stem cells, providing slower aging process for organs, which makes nicotinamide riboside a potential compound against aging and related diseases. The studies were carried out on mice, and during the study regeneration process were obviously detected, whilst the metabolisms were found boosted, and finally, prolonged lives was the result. 

The study were conducted by a team from Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and led by Johan Auwerx. An article written by Hongbo Zhang, a member from the team revealed some secrets about the restorative effect of nicotinamide riboside.

To probe about how the regeneration ability deteriorates when get older, the team checked the performance of mitochondria in front of aging and found that it plays a vital role in the function of stem cells. Meanwhile it was observed by the team that fatigue is the main cause for the decreased ability of stem cells in reproducing specific cells to restore various damages. By empowering stem cells, their regeneration ability can be restored to some degree. As the powering plant of cells, mitochondria are the target to be empowered, and then nicotinamide riboside were administered to make mitochondria more active.

Compared with the mice that were not given to nicotinamide riboside, the experimenting mice perform better in muscle regeneration and so on.

Further studies showed that brain and skin stem cells can be also regenerated with the assistance of nicotinamide riboside, which makes it a highly potential new drug for regeneration against aging led issues. Another good aspect for nicotinamide riboside is that it can be taken with food and no obvious side effects were inspected during the studies.
